Saturday the Island forum was holding a comp at Yaverland, and decided to go.
Yaverland is a shallow sandy beach and with a big bight moon overhead, I thought this comp would be won by a few pout, so one rod went out at the start with a 2 hook flapper and a mixture of rag and lug the other was clip down and sandeel, being the eternal optimist I was hoping for a ray.
Well first knock was an undersized Pout an hour later I followed this with one just in size, but bites were few and far between. By 11.15pm with 3/4 hour left of the comp I'd still only had the one in size Pout and the bloke next to me had weighed a few in.
All of a sudden I had a cracking pull round on the sandeel, I picked the rod up and it went again, I was into a good fish, there was some large surf by now so I took it easy playing the fish, using the waves to help me in with the fish, which was putting up a good fight in the shallow water, Finally I landed this small eyed Ray of 6lb exactly.
Well the comp ended at midnight without any further fish, but thanks to the ray I took first place.
Oh well I suppose its back to the conger hunt next week.
