Thought I would give the Ray fishing a rest this weekend,
so with a pound of Ragworm and some Blueys I headed off to Fort
Victoria in search of a Sole or Bass.
Arrived with Kierran and Lighty
was already there. One rod for the sole with 2 hooks and worm the other
a pennel rig and half a Bluey.
For the first hour there was some
weed so fished in close, 2nd cast and getting a good rattle at 10pm the
first target was in a slip sole.
Well we were in for a good night, the sole were about and it wasn't even fully dark.
Then
it went quiet, the weed dissapeared and so did the fish, Lighty managed
a tiny Pout, I had 2 pout and a silver eel and that was it, at 4am we
called it a night.
Saturday with a load of worm left over decided to give it another go, this time Brambles Bay.
The weather was totally different, with a strong sw wind, arrived and was set up just gone 9.30pm.
1st
cast and I had a double shot of pout, soon followed by another and
shortly after a small Plaice, this all around Low water. But as soon as
the tide started to flood the weed arrived. We ended up fishing just one
rod but the weed didn't clear, infact got worse, so after another hour
of hauling in tons of the stuff we made a quick pack up and went back to
fort Vic.
There was weed here too, but it was just fishable. I
was fishing Sole rigs on both rods, and after an hour got a good take
and in came a Bass of 1.5lb. I then followed this with a slightly bigger
one.
By 3am though the bites had stopped and after 2 nights fishing I
was feeling tired so decided to go home, Picked the first rod up to
find something kicking hard on the end and in came, finally a better
sole, 1lb 4oz.
So that was it, had a few fish but was a long struggle for them, back to the rays I think next weekend, weather permitting.
All fish were returned alive.
