Yarmouth

One of the most productive marks on the Island is Yarmouth Pier.
Casting off the front is favoured for mackerel,Bream and Smoothound during the summer and for cod or whiting during the winter.Pouting and dogfish can be caught all through the year.
Results are usually best at night but there have also been some very good fish landed during daylight hours.Tackle needs to be strong if you intend to tackle the smoothound or Cod.Use strong 4/0 hooks baited with crab or worm for the smoothounds, mackerel for the dogfish and 6/0 with Squid for the Cod.
The stem of the pier can be fished for Bass, flatfish, pout and silver eels by casting out westwards into the ferry channel or eastwards over a large shingle bank which dries at low water.Worm baits and crab are the best all round baits.
Spinning or float fishing amongst the piles with ragworm or lures can be effective for Pollack, mackerel, garfish, scad and Bass.
The tide run is very strong, especially on the ebb,so fishing is best during the flood tide and the first hour of the ebb.Floating weed can also be a problem from the end of June through to September.
The pier is open 24 hours a day and a permit is required, they are available from the pier master and allow you to use two rods.
Other Marks in the Yarmouth area worth considering are Yarmouth sea wall half a mile to the east of the town and the beach at sandhard to the west of the harbour.
Both are pleasant areas, suitable for children and picnics.
The fishing consists of Flounders, silver eels, small wrasse, school bass and Sole.
