A real mixed bag

With no work as such on Wednesday I thought I'd take advantage and go fishing Tuesday evening. Arrived at Yaverland and was set up by 9pm, The idea being to fish one rod long range with sandeel on a clip down rig for Rays, the other a 2 hook flapper size 1 with Rag to try and increase my specie list.

It had been windy all day, but now it had almost disappeared, the sea was calm and I was in time to catch the last of the ebb.

Bait was out and within 5 minutes I had a good pull on the worm rod, slack line then pull again. Felt a good fish, hopefully a Bass, but in came a common Smut of 3lb 3oz.

A good start and as the sun set and the last of the light was fading I had another good rattle and tug on the worm and in came a new species, a Sole of 8ozs.

Darkness had arrived and so had the pout, with at least one a cast and often a double shot.

A slightly better bite produced A nice school Bass of around 1.5lb followed by more pout and then another Bass of similar ilk.

Finally some action on the sandeel, a constant nodding and tugging, thought to myself, I know what that is, and sure enough in came a dogfish of around 1.5lb.

Back to more pout on the worm rod, and then a gentle ratting on the sandeel, looked different, not like a pout bite and in came my 2nd species of the night a strap conger.

Well after that the pout continued, right up to the point the moon poked its head up above the horizon at 2am, then it was like someone switched the light out, the bites ceased. I sat there till 3.30am,another hour and half without some much as a nibble so called it a night. One Smut, one sole, two Bass, one conger a doggie and copious amounts of pout.

Not a bad night, shame the rays didn't show though.
