Well its been a while since I reported anything. The Island is very hit or miss at the moment and I’ve been missing.
After hearing of a few good rays showing at Chale I’ve been up and down those cliffs like a flamin Yo Yo of late. The weather has been gorgeous for it, but the fishing has left a lot to be desired, only managing to land copious amounts of Doggies and Pout. Though the venue continues to inspire confidence.
Well despite my best efforts there was no Rays forthcoming and though I had some good takes close in, probably Bass they eluded me also. Then I heard that the Rays were showing at Yaverland, so a change of venue was in order, and at least I’d get away from the doggies, so this Friday I was set up by 8pm.
Clip down rigs with sandeel as bait and cast at distance, nothing happened till after dark, when I had a good pull down on the rod, a typical Ray bite, or so I thought, there was a good weight and I could feel the fish kicking but to my surprise in came a doggie!!
Well baited up and half hour later another good bite, pull down then slack line, this had to be my Ray, but once again, a big ole doggie this one going 2lb on the nose.
High tide arrived and the bites stopped, I changed one rod over to crab still at distance, had a good bite after 10 minutes and the fish was on, this one definitely wasn’t a doggie fighting all the way in till at 20 yards or so it was gone. The tide started to ebb and the Doggies returned bagging a couple more, finally a different bite resulted in a small Turbot.
I fished on till 3.30am with the tide well out and no more bites I called it a night.
Saturday we were supposed to be fishing a comp at Cowes, but because of weed it was moved last minute to Gurnard.
We were set up by the start of the comp at 8pm and was treated to yet another lovely sunset.
I soon managed to land a couple of undersized Pollock on worm, but they weren’t going to win a comp so changed to crab on one and sandeel on the other rod at distance. Despite some good bites I couldn’t connect and with the comp won by 2 doggies. Unbelievable! I couldn’t stop catching the damned things for weeks then when I want them, nothing.LOl.
Oh well thats fishing!
Back to Chale I think next Friday for another go, ever the optimist.
